When good friends invite me to go somewhere I really don’t care if it’s a good place or not. Good friends equals happy moments for me, no matter what. But if the place is a good one, all the better! Such was my mood the day I went to meet some friends and was happy to make a new one. Miró, the dog:
The plan was to go to a restaurant called “O Velhão”, something like “The Very Old Place” (velho means old in Portuguese). It’s no more than twenty minutes away from the full-of-cars, smooky and crawded São Paulo downtown, if the traffic allows. And it’s in the northern part of the city, where you have some some green hills, so the air is colder, more humid and you have a lot of green all around. Quite the opposite of a typical “São Paulo experience”. When you arrive at the O Velhão, there’s this small street with some shops on both sides. A lovely place.
You have basically two main environments in the restaurant… One is devoted to the “mineira kitchen”, some special kinds of brazilian food, and the other is where you find more italian food, but all adapted to brazilian taste. Depending on the time of the day you will also have live music, maybe in Italian, sung by a real italian!
When you visit São Paulo, don’t forget to spare a day to have lunch at “O Velhão”!
